Anyone know anything about MySQL?

I am trying to install the database system in order to run WordPress, and I don't know what I am doing. I've downloaded it, clicked for it to install itself, but I haven't got any further than that. I can't find /usr/local/mysql and have no clue.

Anyone use MySQL for research? I'm not a quant. person, so I've barely mastered excel spreadsheets.

MySQL is a database server; if you're installing WordPress on your web server, MySQL should be installed on that machine. If you have a web hosting account somewhere, MySQL will likely already be installed, and then WordPress gets installed there too. And if you have a web hosting account, you also probably have a graphical user interface to MySQL (and maybe even a 1-click install for WordPress). The only reason you'd download MySQL to your personal machine is if your personal machine is also your web server.
